Klondike Solitaire — questions & answers
Is Klondike solitaire always winnable?
No. Klondike is dealt at random and not every hand can be solved — a good share are winnable with careful play, but some deals are impossible no matter what you do. Turning fewer stock cards and freeing face-down cards early gives you the best odds.
What card can move onto an empty column in Klondike?
Only a King, or a face-up run led by a King. Empty columns are valuable — opening one lets you park a King and rebuild the sequence beneath it, so try to empty a short column when you can.
Is Klondike the same as regular solitaire?
Yes. Klondike is the game most people mean by ‘Solitaire’, including the classic version bundled with Windows. You build four foundations from Ace to King, one per suit, dealing from a stock as you go.
